| | | | | | | January 21, 2008 | | PLP Debuts New Line of Polymer Insulators | | |
Cleveland, Ohio – January 15, 2008 – Preformed Line Products (PLP) announces a new line of polymer insulators designed for use with PLP formed wire ties, plastic ties and hand tie wire. The new insulators are designed for use with overhead distribution lines with either bare or covered conductors.
PLP polymer insulators can be used for any application that calls for porcelain or polymer pin insulators, and are suitable for use with all types of jacketed or bare conductors. They have been designed to conform to applicable electrical and mechanical requirements of ANSI C29.5 pin insulator standards. Polymer insulators are made from a proprietary high-density polyethylene compound that includes UV and track resistance additives to ensure long service life. They are currently available in a full line of 15 kV and 35 kV Tie Top and Vise Top designs. A complete line of 25 kV designs will be available soon.
Polymer insulators offer a number of advantages over traditional porcelain insulators. Lighter weight makes them easier to install, high impact resistance renders them virtually indestructible, protecting against vandalism, and reduced abrasion at the insulator/conductor interface preserves the overall service life of the conductor. They also feature a unique descending skirt design and polyethylene surface, which provide moisture and contamination-shedding properties.
The polymer insulator line comes in two basic designs:
Tie Top Polymer Insulators:
- Matches most head and neck dimensional standards for ANSI C29.5, class 55-3,55-4, 55-5, 55-6 or 55-7 pin type insulators.
- Provides superior holding and electrical performance with PLP metal or plastic factory formed ties
Vise Top Polymer Insulators:
- Uses unique plastic clamp mechanism and black nylon torque bolts to secure the conductor.
- Insures proper torque is applied to mechanism.
- Clamp design provides quick installation.

| | | | | | | September 27, 2005 | | New VORTX™ Vibration Damper Reduces Power Conductor Vibration Over Wider Range Frequencies | | |
Cleveland, Ohio – September 27, 2005 - Preformed Line Products Company (PLP) introduces the new VORTX Vibration Damper to protect power conductor and other cables from the effects of wind-induced motion.
Aeolian vibration is a high frequency, low amplitude motion caused by smooth laminar winds passing across the line. When conductors or cables are exposed to this wind a phenomenon known as eddy or vortex shedding produces vibration in the line. Aeolian vibration can cause hardware breakdown, conductor fatigue, abrasion, and eventually, conductor failure.
The VORTX Vibration Damper improves on the decades old technology of the Stockbridge type damper. The original Stockbridge damper was effective at reducing vibration for two frequencies of conductor vibration. The VORTX Vibration Damper outperforms this through the use of a multi-response design that effectively reduces vibration over a wider range of imposing frequencies. This is accomplished by a unique design that matches weight sizes and messenger strand lengths to specific conductor/cable impedance and line operating conditions to achieve optimum performance.
Key features of the VORTX Vibration Damper include:
- Contoured Clamp – Aluminum alloy extrusions offer a precise fit to evenly capture the conductor.
- Clamp Profile – The clamp profile is configured to hang from the conductor or cable during installation in accordance with IEC standards. Hands are free to wrench tighten.
- Messenger Strand – Galvanized steel messenger strand provides maximum absorbsion of vibration energy.
- Weight – Galvanized modular iron weights hug the sides of the messenger strand not enclosing it, reducing the possibility of corrosion.
- Weight Attachment – Collet type or crimped attachment meet pull-off strength requirements in accordance with IEC standards without changing properties of adjoining messenger.
